APPLYING FOR YOUR PROVISIONAL DRIVING LICENCE


 
Before you can learn to drive a car you must apply for a provisional driving licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
 
You can apply for your licence 3 months prior to your 17th birthday and you can start to drive when you are 17 years old.  
 
 
* You can start to learn to drive a car when you are 16 years old if you are receiving Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component).

 
APPLY ONLINE * You can apply for your first provisional driving licence for a car using the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA) secure and easy to use on-line service.  www.dvla.gov.uk

 
APPLY IN PERSON OR BY POST * You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches.
You will need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the current fee of £43.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD.

FIRST PROVISIONAL PHOTOCARD LICENCE (CAR) = £34.00 ONLINE  APPLICATION  /  £43.00 POSTAL APPLICATION 

Change PROVISIONAL PHOTOCARD LICENCE to FULL PHOTOCARD LICENCE = FREE

Change PAPER LICENCE to PHOTOCARD LICENCE (including the removal of expired endorsements) = £20.00

Replace lost or stolen PHOTOCARD LICENCE = £20.00
  
 
 
You must be in possession of your provisional driving licence and it must be date valid before you start to drive.
 
 
 
A PINK photocard is a FULL driving licence
  
 
GREEN photocard is a PROVISIONAL driving licence
