VEHICLE SAFETY CHECKS

  
At the start of the driving test the examiner will ask one show me and one tell me question regarding the maintenance checks that should be carried out on the vehicle before beginning a journey. The candidate will be required to show and tell the examiner what they would do in order to carry out the respective checks. Certain questions will require the candidate to open the bonnet of the car.
  
  
Please note: All Show me / Tell me answers are related to the current "CITROEN C1 SPORT" KJT Driver Training vehicle.

QUESTION 1           SHOW ME

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

 

Identify YELLOW circular dipstick (situated centre left), describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum marker dots on the dipstick.

 

 

QUESTION 2           SHOW ME 

Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

 

If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

 

 

QUESTION 3           SHOW ME  

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

 

Identify high and low level markings on header tank (situated right of centre front) and describe how to top up to the correct level.

 

 

QUESTION 4           SHOW ME

Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear.

 

Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle, apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel.

 

 

QUESTION 5           TELL ME

Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

 

Identify reservoir (situated left front) explain how to check level. (Lift up top of BLUE filler cap and you should see windscreen washer fluid). 

 

 

QUESTION 6           SHOW ME

Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

 

Check is carried out by using horn (No need for the ignition switch to be turned on)

 

 

QUESTION 7           SHOW ME

Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

 

Identify reservoir (situated back left), check level against high and low markings on the right side of reservoir.

 

 

QUESTION 8           SHOW ME

Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

 

Apply the indicators via the normal indicator stalk and check the function of all indicators.

(You need to switch the ignition on, DO NOT start engine)

 

 

QUESTION 9           SHOW ME

Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.

 

Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help, the examiner can  assist you.

(You need to switch the ignition on, DO NOT start engine) 3 brake lights should be visible.

 

 

 

QUESTION 10         TELL ME

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

 

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack when using the brake pedal. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

 

 

QUESTION 11         TELL ME  

Tell me how you would check that the headlights (Main Beam) & tail lights are working. (No need to exit vehicle)  MAIN BEAM warning light is (BLUE)

 

Explanation: Operate lighting switch (left stalk) by fully rotating it towards the front of the car (No need to turn on the ignition). (As this is a "Tell Me" question, there is no need to physically check the lights or bulbs)

 

 

QUESTION 12         TELL ME

Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

 

Manufacturer’s guide situated in drivers door storage well. Tyre pressure chart is situated on the passenger side door pillar.

Use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.

QUESTION 13         TELL ME

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

 

No cuts or bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Use of wear markers situated within the tyre tread area (Silver Tread Gauge situated behind driver’s sun visor)

 

 

QUESTION 14         SHOW ME

Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers

 

Operate control stalk situated on the right hand side of the steering wheel to wash and wipe windscreen

(Turn ignition on,  DO NOT start engine)

 

 

QUESTION 15         SHOW ME

Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens

 

Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated rear screen to clear windscreen, windows and rear window. (Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration)

 

 

QUESTION 16         SHOW ME

Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use it. (No need to exit vehicle)

 

Operate lighting switch (Turn on dipped headlights and then rotate fog light switch). Check fog warning light is on (ORANGE) Explain use.

 

 

QUESTION 17         SHOW ME

Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped beam to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car

 

Operate lighting switch (No need for the ignition switch to be turned on), Push stalk away for Main beam and pull back stalk for dipped beam.

DIPPED BEAM warning light is (GREEN)                            MAIN BEAM warning light is (BLUE)

 

 

QUESTION 18         TELL ME

Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash

 

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. PLEASE NOTE: Some head restraints might not be adjustable and may be built into the seat back as a complete unit (aeroplane style). The KJT DRIVER TRAINING Citroen C1 car has aeroplane style seats.

 

 

QUESTION 19         TELL ME

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system (ABS)

 

ABS Warning light (ORANGE) should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system
