The examiner will ask you to stop on the left hand side of the road in a Safe, Convenient And Legal Position (SCALP).
S - SAFE - Not on a bend or a brow of a hill. Stop on a straight section of road where you are visible and can be easily passed by other traffic.
C - CONVENIENT - Not in front of a private driveway, access road, or lowered kerb. Do not create a hazard or block the flow of traffic.
A - AND
L - LEGAL - Not within 10 metres of a junction in any direction, never on double yellow lines or single yellow lines inside the time restrictions.
P - POSITION - Always stop on the left. Wheels parallel, alongside a full height kerb approximately a tyres width away from the kerb.
When the car is stationary, you will need to SECURE it from moving. Apply the handbrake, select neutral, cancel any signal, retract your feet away from the pedals and keep the engine running. This process will take place before each set manoeuvre is carried out on the road. Always ensure that one hand remains on the steering wheel in a driving position when the engine is still running just in case you may need to control the direction of your car if you are hit at any point by a moving vehicle.
The examiner will then tell you which manoeuvre they would like you to perform.
You will be asked to perform any two of the following set manoeuvres:
* BAY PARK
* PARALLEL PARK
* TURN IN THE ROAD
* REVERSE AROUND THE CORNER
* In addition, a ratio of every third candidate throughout the test day is asked to perform an EMERGENCY STOP as a third manoeuvre.

THE GOLDEN RULES OF MANOEUVRING
KNOW THE MANOEUVRE - Understand the MECHANICS of each manoeuvre and the ROUTINES required to achieve a good result.
POSITION THE CAR - Set the car up accurately for the manoeuvre using GOOD JUDGEMENT and EFFECTIVE STEERING.
SECURE THE CAR - Use the HANDBRAKE to prevent the car from MOVING before each forward or backward section of your manoeuvre.
PREPARE THE CAR - Set a LIGHT CONSISTENT GAS and use a LIGHT CLUTCH BITE. The car must always be UNDER FULL CONTROL.
OBSERVE - Use CONTINUOUS 360 DEGREE OBSERVATIONS from the very start and continue until the manoeuvre is fully completed.
MOVE - Take your TIME. Monitor the SPEED and POSITION of the car throughout the manoeuvre. ACT ON WHAT YOU SEE.
RECOVERY ROUTINE - If the manoeuvre is not working out, STOP, RESET, MOVE FORWARD, RE-POSITION, then FINISH the manoeuvre.
INBOUND TRAFFIC WHEN MANOEUVRING - Stay CALM, stay FOCUSED, DO NOT RUSH and ASSESS THE WHOLE SITUATION.
USE VERBAL LOGS - Verbally INFORM the EXAMINER by saying, "I AM AWARE OF THE APPROACHING CAR" - "I AM STOPPING" etc.
SHOW CONSIDERATION - On all manoeuvres you are the HAZARD, always show consideration, STOP and GIVE WAY to other road users.
BAY PARK
WHAT THE TEST REQUIRES
You should be able to park your car into a bay by reversing from the left or the right.
Please note: This manoeuvre will be carried out at the very start or at the end of the driving test in the DSA Test Centre car park.
Skills you should show: Use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before moving off, move out of the bay deciding whether to reverse to the left or to the right, and selecting which bay you wish to park in. Set the car up for the manoeuvre and then secure with the handbrake, use reverse 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before moving off and then reverse under full control into the bay without touching any of the selected bay lines. Use continuous observations at all times and the recovery routine if required, secure the car with the handbrake and select neutral at the end of the manoeuvre.
After the manoeuvre is completed wait for the examiner to give you further directions, when you are asked to move off, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear and safe to go, provide a signal if it is necessary.
PARALLEL PARK
WHAT THE TEST REQUIRES
You should be able to park your car behind a vehicle parked at the kerb.
Skills you should show: Starting from a SCALP position approximately 15 metres from behind the parked vehicle, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before moving off. Position your car alongside the parked vehicle no closer than half a metre or no further away than one metre (this position should be calculated by checking how close the parked vehicle is situated alongside the kerb) and then secure with the handbrake. Use reverse 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before moving off, reverse under full control ensuring not to be too close to the parked vehicle, finishing directly behind it in a parked position approximately a tyres width from the kerb and within a distance of two car lengths. Use continuous observations at all times and the recovery routine if required, secure the car with the handbrake and select neutral at the end of the manoeuvre.
After the manoeuvre is completed wait for the examiner to give you further directions, when you are asked to move off, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear and safe to go, provide a signal if it is necessary.
TURN IN THE ROAD
WHAT THE TEST REQUIRES
You should be able to turn your car around to face the opposite direction taking care not to touch or overhang the kerb.
Skills you should show: Starting from a SCALP position use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before moving off, balance the accelerator and clutch to move slowly while steering briskly on both forward and backward legs respectively, ensure that you keep the car under full control and secure with the handbrake after each leg. Use 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go at the start of every leg. This exercise will take a minimum of three legs, if you need to do more, this is acceptable. Use continuous observations up and down the road at all times and use the recovery routine if required. If any inbound traffic arrives while you are doing this manoeuvre, verballly log that you have seen the incoming vehicle to the examiner and carry on and complete the current leg before stopping to allow the traffic through. After the traffic has passed, finish the manoeuvre.
Please note: Observe the road ahead while completing the final leg of this manoeuvre as the examiner may ask you to either, pull over and stop on the left, or, to continue to drive ahead down the road.
REVERSE AROUND THE CORNER
WHAT THE TEST REQUIRES
You should be able to reverse your car around a left corner kerbline.
Skills you should show: Starting from a SCALP position with the junction in full view in front of you, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before moving off, drive slowly past and fully observe the junction to be used for the manoeuvre. Stop when you can see the junction clearly in the left exterior mirror, setting the car up approximately the width of a drain cover away from the kerb and then secure with the handbrake. Use reverse 360 degree observations checking that it is clear to go before reversing, keep your car under full control and reasonably close to the kerb approximately within half a metre without striking or mounting it. Use continuous observations at all times and the recovery routine if required. The examiner will ask you stop when you have reversed a distance of approximately two to three car lengths into the junction, finish the manoeuvre by securing the car with the handbrake and selecting neutral.
After the manoeuvre is completed wait for the examiner to give you further directions, when you are asked to move off, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear and safe to go, provide a signal if it is necessary.
EMERGENCY STOP
WHAT THE TEST REQUIRES
You should be able stop your car in an emergency as quickly as possible without locking the wheels.
Skills you should show: Starting from a SCALP position, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear and safe to go before moving off. Move off and drive down the road changing gears as normal building up your speed to the speed limit of the road. Be ready to react and stop the car on the examiners verbal command of "STOP". You should stop the car in a short distance safely without locking the wheels and under full control without risk to any other road users, then secure the car with the handbrake and select neutral.
After the manoeuvre is completed wait for the examiner to give you further directions, when you are asked to move off, use forward 360 degree observations checking that it is clear and safe to go.
