VEHICLE SAFETY CHECKS - SHOW ME / TELL ME

At the start of the driving test the examiner will ask one show me and one tell me question regarding the maintenance checks that should be carried out on the vehicle before beginning a journey.

 

The candidate will be required to show and tell the examiner what they would do in order to carry out the respective checks.

Listed below are all 19 questions and answers. Certain questions will require the candidate to open the bonnet of the car.

Please note: All Show me / Tell me answers are related to the "Citroen C1 VTR+" KJT Driver Training vehicle.

 If one or both "Show me" "Tell me" questions are answered incorrectly, one MINOR driving fault  will be recorded.

 

SHOW ME / TELL ME

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS


QUESTION 1.  (SHOW ME)  Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil.

ANSWER. Identify the yellow circular dipstick (situated centre left of engine) and describe how to check the oil level against the minimum and maximum marker dots on the dipstick.


QUESTION 2.  (SHOW ME)  Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

ANSWER. If the steering becomes heavy the steering may be faulty. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made.


1) Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.

2) Turning the steering wheel after just moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assisted steering is functioning correctly.


QUESTION 3.  (SHOW ME)  Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level.

ANSWER. Identify the level marker on the header tank (situated right front of engine) and describe how to top up to the correct level.


QUESTION 4.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

ANSWER. Make sure that you keep safe control of the vehicle by applying the foot brake firmly. Demonstrate by applying the handbrake so that when it is fully applied it secures itself and not be at the end of its working travel.


QUESTION 5. (TELL ME)  Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

ANSWER. Identify the reservoir (situated left front of engine, blue filler cap) explain how to check the level up to the maximum marker.


QUESTION 6.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

ANSWER. Press the horn and listen.(no need for the ignition switch to be turned on).


QUESTION 7.  (SHOW ME)  Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

ANSWER. Identify the brake fluid reservoir (situated back left of engine) check the fluid level against the minimum / maximum level markers.


QUESTION 8.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.

ANSWER. Apply the indicators via the normal indicator stalk and check the function of all indicator bulbs. (switch the ignition on, do not start the engine)  


QUESTION 9.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.

ANSWER. Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help. The examiner may assist you.(switch the ignition on, do not start engine) 3 Brake lights should be visible.


QUESTION 10.  (TELL ME)  Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

ANSWER. Brake foot pressure should feel firm on the brake pedal and not feel spongy. The car should not pull to one side when the brakes are applied when being tested in motion.


QUESTION 11.  (TELL ME)  Tell me how you would check that the headlights (main beam warning light is blue) and tail lights are working. (no need to exit the vehicle)

ANSWER. Explanation, Operate lighting switch (left stalk) by fully rotating it towards the front of the car (no need to turn on the ignition). As this is a tell me question, there is no need to physically check the lights / bulbs.


QUESTION 12.  (TELL ME)  Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

ANSWER. Information will be found using the car manufacturer's manual (situated in the drivers storage well). Tyre pressure chart situated on the passenger side door pillar. Check the tyre pressures by using a reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold. Don't forget the spare tyre and remember to refit the valve caps.(tyre pressure gauge is situated behind the drivers sun visor)


QUESTION 13.  (TELL ME)  Tell me how you would check the tyres to show that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

ANSWER. A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central 3/4s of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. Use of wear markers situated within the tyre tread area. (tyre tread gauge is situated behind the drivers sun visor).


QUESTION 14.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

ANSWER. Operate control stalk situated on the right hand side of the steering wheel to wash and wipe windscreen, turn ignition on if a demonstration is required, do not start the engine.


QUESTION 15.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.

ANSWER. Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.


QUESTION 16.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use it. (No need to exit vehicle).

ANSWER. Operate lighting switch (turn on dipped headlights and then rotate the fog switch). Check warning light is on (orange) . Explain use.


QUESTION 17.  (SHOW ME)  Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped beam (green warning light) to main beam (blue warning light) and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

ANSWER. Operate lighting switch (no need for the ignition switch to be turned on), Push left stalk away to the front of the car to select main beam, check with main beam warning light.


QUESTION 18.  (TELL ME)  Tell me how you make sure that your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

ANSWER. The head restraint should be adjusted so that the soft padded part of the restraint lines up centrally with the eye line of the driver. Some vehicles have a full length backrest including head restraints (aeroplane seats) The KJT training vehicle has aeroplane seats.


QUESTION 19.  (TELL ME)  Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your Anti lock Braking System.

ANSWER. ABS warning light (orange) would illuminate if there was a fault with your anti lock braking system.
