All examiners are trained to carry out the driving test to the same standard, they do not have any pass or fail quotas.
 
Examiners are accompanied on test regularly by the Senior Driving Examiner from their local test centre.
 
Examiners are tested periodically to ensure that a uniform standard and correct level of assessment is maintained.
 
Examiners will always display a professional attitude and approach to all test candidates.
 
As long as the pupil demonstrates the required driving test standard, they will have a successful driving test result.

PRELIMINARIES

Good morning / afternoon Mr / Mrs / Miss / Ms .......................... May I see your Driving Licence and Photo ID and also your Theory Test pass certificate please.

While I am checking your driving documents,  Mr / Mrs / Miss / Ms ................................... would you read and sign the insurance and residency declaration please? (On the DRIVING TEST REPORT FORM).

Is your name and address still the same as on your driving licence? If not ............................................. Could you please enter your new address on the counterpart of your licence.

Would you like your instructor / accompanying driver to accompany you on test? .......YES / NO  (If YES, the DRIVING TEST REPORT FORM must be marked as accompanied).

If, candidate says 'NO'. Ask: Would you like your instructor / accompanying driver to be there at the end of test for the result and feedback. Thank you. ...................................... Will you lead the way to your car please.


In an effort to create a more relaxed and informal atmosphere during the test,examiners are encouraged to introduce themselves and use the candidate's first name, provided there is no objection. As self-introduction works best when it is spontaneous the examiner should decide whether to do it on the way to the car, or wait until seated inside it. Examiners are encouraged to use a form of words that suits their own style and personality.

The following two examples are for guidance only:  I'm ....................., I see your first name is ................... May I call you ................................?                          My name is ................................. would you object to me calling you ............................?

A pre-test brief should be offered. This can be given during the short walk to the car, or, in the car itself. This should outline what will happen during the test, for example: The test will last about 38-40 minutes and it will take in various roads and traffic conditions and I will ask you to complete one manoeuvre and we may carry out an emergency stop. The sort of things you have been practising with your instructor / accompanying driver.

GENERAL DRIVING DIRECTIONS

Would you like to start your engine ....................................................

When I ask you to move off, follow the road ahead turning turn left or right when I ask you to do so,  I will tell you in plenty of time and also follow any signs that I may point out for you to follow ...................... Move off when you are ready, please.

Would you pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please. or Pull up along here, just before ............................. please.

Move off when you are ready, please.

Take the next road on the left / right, please.

Will you take the second road on the left / right, please. (If necessary add - this is the first turn).

At the end of the road turn left / right, please.

At the roundabout ............................ turn left please (it is the first exit).

At the roundabout ............................ follow the road ahead (it is the second exit).

At the roundabout ............................ turn right please (it is the third exit).

(Additional information should be given if necessary to assist the driver to plan their route through the hazard. Examples are in brackets above).

 

 

GENERAL DRIVING DIRECTIONS - EXTRA

Moving Off and Stopping - Would you pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please. or, Pull up along here, just before ......... please. Thank you. ......................... Move off when you are ready, please.

Moving Off at an Angle - Pull up on the left just before you get to the next parked car, please. (If necessary add - leave enough room to move away).  Thank you. ......................... Move off when you are ready, please.

Hill starts - Up and Down - Would you pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please. or, Pull up along here, just before .......... please. Thank you. ......................... Move off when you are ready, please.

 

 

INDEPENDENT DRIVING 

Would you pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please. or Pull up along here, just before ............................. please.

For the next 10 minutes approximately I would like you to drive independently, I will give you a series of directions that I would like you to follow ................................................................................................

Move off when you are ready, please.

After the exercise ............................................................... Would you pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please. or Pull up along here, just before ............................. please.

Thats the end of your independent drive. Please follow my individual directions from now on.

REVERSE MANOEUVRES

Reverse Parking - Bay Park  (When the Bay Park manoeuvre is at the start of the test, the examiner will include the general forward driving brief after the manoeuvre has been completed)

Pull forward turning either to the left or the right so that your wheels are straight, then reverse into a convenient parking bay of your choice. Finish within one of the bays.

After the manoeuvre is completed, Thank you.

When I ask you to move off, drive out of the car park turning left / right.

Then follow my directions turning turn left or right when I ask you to do so, I will tell you in plenty of time and also follow any signs that I may point out for you to follow.

Left Reverse - Around the Corner

Pull up along here just before you reach the next road on the left, please.

I would like you to reverse into this road on the left. Drive past it and stop, then reverse back in keeping reasonably close to the kerb. and I will stop you in a suitable place.

Thank you ....................... stop the car here.

 After the manoeuvre is completed, Thank you. ................................... Move off when you are ready and follow the road ahead .................................................. or, turn .........................

 

Turn in the Road

Would you pull up on the left just past the ................................. please.

I would like you to turn your car around to face the opposite direction, in as least moves as possible.

Move off when you are ready .....................

After the manoeuvre is nearly completed while the car is still moving at the end of the final leg................ Would you pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please ........................ or, carry on driving and follow the road ahead ...........

 

Reverse Parking - Parallel Park

Would you pull up on the left before you get to the next parked car, please.

This is the reverse parking exercise. I would like you drive forward and stop alongside the car ahead. Then reverse in and park reasonably close to and parallel with the kerb. Try to complete the exercise within two car lengths.

After the manoeuvre is completed .................. Thank you.

EMERGENCY STOP

Pull up on the left at a safe, convenient and legal place, please.

Shortly I shall ask you to carry out an emergency stop.

When I give this signal, (simultaneously demonstrate, and say) 'Stop', I'd like you to stop as quickly and as safely as possible. Before giving the signal I shall look round to make sure it is safe, but please wait for my signal before doing the exercise.

Do you understand the instructions?

Move off when you are ready ..................... and at the appropriate time chosen for the exercise ....................  "EXAMINER SIGNAL" - by use of hand and "STOP" said verbally (SIMULTANEOUSLY)

After the exercise - Thank you. I will not ask you to do that exercise again.

END OF THE TEST

Drive into the car park and I will give you further directions of where to stop. Directions ...............................................................

In the car park when the car is secure and stationary ..................Thank you.

Thats the end of your driving test, please switch off the engine and give me a moment to complete my paperwork.

 

 

RESULT OF THE TEST

The test result  will be delivered professionally with respect and empathy for the candidate whether it is a pass or fail outcome.

Examiner discusses high and low spots regarding the candidates test drive performance to encourage their safe driving for life.
